What it means
Love — and the reason this entry exists: the simplified character has no heart in it. The traditional 愛 keeps one. That is the whole story.
爱:以及这一条存在的理由——简体字里没有心。繁体「愛」有一颗心。事情就是这一句。
Where the character comes from
Simplified 爱 removes the 心 from 愛. This is the single best case study in what simplification costs: not a typo, but the loss of the organ the meaning was built on. If the heart is the point of the word, the simplified form has quietly removed it.
Traditional 愛: 爫 (hand) over 冖 (cover) over 心 (heart), with 夂 (go) — a hand reaching over the heart. Simplified 爱 drops the 心 and the 夂 is gone too.

How it gets misread
爱 (simplified) as if the heart were there → 愛 for the heart
The simplified form is not a stylistic variant — the 心 component is absent. Anyone relying on "love has a heart in it" should look at the traditional character.
爱 with 心 still in the middle (a common "traditional-style" error) → A correct 愛
The traditional form has 爫 above, 冖 cover, 心 inside, 夂 below. A heart dropped into the simplified frame is neither script.
Before you ink
If the heart is what you mean, take the traditional 愛. The simplified 爱 is correct and much more common — but it is not the same word, and on skin the difference is permanent.
This is the one character where "use the traditional form" is genuinely advice rather than fussiness. Everything else on this site, we let go.
