What it means
The Way — the path beneath all paths, and the oldest philosophical question in a single character. Not a road to somewhere; the study of how to walk.
道:一切路径之下的那条路。最古老的哲学命题装在一个字里——不是通往某处的路,而是「怎么走」这件事本身。
Where the character comes from
The oracle-bone form is three thousand years old: a crossroads with a single person standing in the middle. Laozi rode west out of the Zhou decline with five thousand characters written at a mountain pass, and opened them with the sentence that made the word famous.
Oracle bone combines 行 (crossroads) with 人 (person): the original meaning is simply a road being walked.

How it gets misread
Dō → Dào
The same graph is read differently in the two languages — a Japanese reading of a Chinese character is the most common misreading on this one.
Before you ink
A single character this old reads as considered rather than decorative. The back of the neck is the canonical position; 3–8 cm works almost anywhere.
The character is identical to Japanese どう (dō). If you would rather not be read as wearing a Japanese-style tattoo, the seal-script version signals ancient Chinese form.
